Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Wednesday

Naked and Afraid 8 p.m., Discovery

Like Adam and Eve, the contestants are trying to survive in the wilderness in pairs. Can they weather the bugs, and the sun, and the muddy swamps? They’re facing a few weeks of hard times, like the “Survivor” competitors. Oh, yeah, and THEY’RE NAKED, PEOPLE, NAKED. Talk about your not-so-subtle gimmicks. Anyhow, in this episode our heavily pixilated players get dirty — no, not that kind of dirty — in Madagascar.

Modern Family 9 p.m., ABC

There was a time when I wouldn’t miss an episode of this series. But somewhere in Season 3, I realized it was repeating itself. And now that old episodes are plastered all over USA, the need to watch is even less imperative. That said, I never regret tuning in to catch up with the characters as they go through their familiar motions. Plus, tonight Fred Armisen, Stephen Merchant, and Patton Oswalt are guest starring.
