On Demand movie highlights

The Impossible

(Showtime on Comcast) A grueling, well-crafted, true-life drama that takes one of the worst natural disasters in history — the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami — and reduces it to a really bad day at Club Med. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are excellent as vacationing Europeans in Thailand, as is Tom Holland as their eldest son. (PG-13; runs through May 12)

Ty Burr

Ordinary People

(Free on Comcast) Robert Redford’s impressive directorial debut. It’s his version of Judith Guest’s novel about a family of Midwesterners trying to learn how to grieve. Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, and Timothy Hutton give superb performances. (R; runs through May 20)

Mona Lisa

(Free on Comcast) A great romantic gangster movie. Bob Hoskins bristles with tenderness as a sweet thug whose feelings go to his fists, and Cathy Tyson is a cold and lonely, lovely work of art as the statuesque call girl he loves. (R; runs through May 20)
