300: Rise of an Empire

(Just in on Comcast) A 3-D sequel to the 2006 action hit that pioneered a new genre: Ancient Bro History. Athenian hero Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) tries to keep the Persians at bay while whipping Greek city-states into, you know, a nation. Pretty ridiculous, but Eva Green is gloriously mean as Persian naval commander Artemisia. (R; runs through Nov. 2)

Winter’s Tale

(Just in on Comcast) Writer-director Akiva Goldsman takes a meat tenderizer to Mark Helprin’s epic 1983 magical-realist novel, hammering away until all that’s left is romantic-fantasy mush. Colin Farrell plays a heroic burglar in pre-WWI Manhattan, Jessica Brown Findlay (“Downton Abbey”) is the rich girl he loves, and Russell Crowe is a demonic (no, really) gang leader after Farrell’s soul. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 2)

Dr. Dolittle 2 ½

(Starz on Comcast) Still pretty bland, but this warm, fuzzy sequel is an improvement on the first outing, even if it does go on too long and hit the obvious over the head. Eddie Murphy’s doc who talks to the animals keeps his family together while taking on a rampaging lumber company that wants to wipe out a Northern California habitat. (PG; runs through Nov. 13)
