Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV Wednesday night

    Rome 8 p.m., HBO Signature

For some reason, HBO has been airing episodes of this excellent two-season drama from 2005. Maybe they think that fans of “Game of Thrones” will find something to love in “Rome,” which paved the way for the George Railroad Martin TV epic. For me, “Rome” is one of the dramas that critics often forget to mention when talking about the Golden Age of TV. Created by Bruno Heller, who went on to make the much lighter “The Mentalist,” “Rome” is a sprawling historical fiction with plenty of swords and plenty of sex. Operation Maneater 10 p.m., PBS

I’ve always wanted to see an in-depth investigative analysis of the making of the Hall & Oates hit “Maneater.” For one thing, who had their finger on the reverb? And was Daryl Hall’s hair moussed in the video — or was it sprayed? Or, is it possible, both? Nah. Kidding. This is another scare series, with veterinarian Mark Evans using technology to keep deadly predators away from people, including great white sharks, Nile crocodiles, and polar bears.
