Viewers may have expected to see actress Melissa McCarthy reprise her Emmy-winning parody of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer during the 2017 Emmy Awards Sunday night. Instead, they got the genuine article, with Spicer gamely parodying his own fiery post-inauguration press conference.

During host Stephen Colbert’s monologue, Colbert made several jokes about President Donald Trump, setting up Spicer’s appearance with a joke about Trump’s concern with big ratings.

“Of course, what really matters to Donald Trump is ratings,” Colbert said. “You gotta have the big numbers. And I certainly hope we achieve that tonight. Unfortunately at this point we have no way of knowing how big our audience is. I mean, is there anyone who could say how big the audience is? Sean, do you know?”

At that point, Spicer walked out onto the stage behind a podium.

“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period,” Spicer said. “Both in person and around the world.”

“Wow, that really soothes my fragile ego,” Colbert replied. “I can understand why you’d want one of these guys around. Melissa McCarthy, everyone!”
