As a massive “Knots Landing” fan — I even wrote lyrics to its theme song, which I will perform for you personally once I get the receipt for your $1 million deposit into my bank account — this news thrills.

Nicollette Sheridan has been cast as Alexis Carrington in the CW reboot of “Dynasty.” Finding someone to step into the role that Joan Collins made famous couldn’t have been easy; Collins’s Alexis is one of TV’s best-known and most indelible diva characters.

But by choosing Sheridan, the CW and the show’s producers have done nicely. Sheridan has played a pair of soap queens — Paige on “Knots” and Edie on “Desperate Housewives” — and played them with formidable hauteur. In her own way, she rates as a high priestess of lowdown scheming along with Collins, Donna Mills, Heather Locklear, and Marcia Cross during her “Melrose Place” years. Sheridan also has some dish cred of her own, having tangled with ABC and show creator Marc Cherry over being let go from “Desperate Housewives.”

Sheridan is due to join “Dynasty,” which airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m., sometime later this season. Her Alexis will throw everyone’s lives into chaos, “challenging Blake’s marriage to Cristal, seeking to reunite with her children, and fighting to claim what is hers,” according to a CW press release.
