The new Monks Garden at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is the final piece in the museum's ambitious expansion.
Landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh's new design for the garden opens this week.
“Not to be mean, but [Mrs. Gardner] never got the garden right,” Van Valkenburgh said. “She never liked it.”
Van Valkenburgh took his inspiration from the tour of the museum given to him by director Anne Hawley.
The garden is 7,545 square feet.
