A public food market in downtown Boston would sell exclusively Massachusetts-based products under a plan being considered by state officials that would significantly limit the market’s inventory but provide the rare guarantee of truly local food. The concept, while appealing to many, is generating considerable debate among food producers worried about striking the right balance between emphasizing local products and providing a range of items broad enough to build a large customer base.

Highlighting Mass. produce makes great sense in this new market. Shutting out the rest of the world, though, is shortsighted. If you want people to shop there, but they have to go someplace else to get the rest of their food... Then Boston will learn the hard lesson of the public market in Portland, Maine, and the market will be a beautiful building that vendors can't survive in.
