Public market could have local restriction

If a food market on the Greenway is limited to Massachusetts products, there would be plenty of cheese and apples, but bananas would be off the list.

A public food market in downtown Boston would sell exclusively Massachusetts-based products under a plan being considered by state officials that would significantly limit the market’s inventory but provide the rare guarantee of truly local food. The concept, while appealing to many, is generating considerable debate among food producers worried about striking the right balance between emphasizing local products and providing a range of items broad enough to build a large customer base.
