Charitable giving goes high tech

Local companies tap convenience of Web to encourage donations to charities

Online giving has risen sharply in recent years, hitting $22 billion in 2010, a 34 percent jump over 2009. And with more people looking first to the Web to do good, a handful of social enterprise startups and local tech companies are trying to tap into that increase in online altruism. They are running Internet auctions for causes, using social media to spur giving, and coming up with new ways for Massachusetts nonprofits to benefit from highly skilled pro bono help.
