Akamai acquires key rival Cotendo with $268m deal

Shares of Akamai Technologies Inc. , a Cambridge company that manages Web traffic for some of the Internet’s biggest sites, jumped 19 percent yesterday after it announced plans to buy rival Cotendo Inc. for $268 million. The deal eliminates a threat to Akamai’s dominance in the content delivery network business from a small competitor that had been making big strides speeding up Web access on mobile phones, a fast growing segment of Akamai’s business.
