Markets retreat on Europe’s credit drop

Indexes fell after S&P dropped the credit ratings of France, Austria, Italy, and Spain. Europe’s woes overshadowed data showing that US consumer confidence rose more than forecast in January, a sign household spending may hold up early this year. The trade gap, however, widened more than forecast in November as exports fell and oil and auto imports rose.
