China court refuses to halt iPad sales

Apple wins one round in a trademark fight

SHANGHAI - A local court here has rejected an effort by a Chinese company to stop Apple from selling its popular iPad here during a trademark dispute over who owns the rights to the iPad name. The Shanghai Pudong New Area People’s Court released a statement on its website Thursday saying it would not rule because a related trademark court case between the two companies is pending in Guangdong province, in southern China. An Apple spokeswoman said the company was pleased with the decision but would continue to challenge the position of the Chinese company, Proview International, which claims it owns the trademark rights to the iPad name in mainland China.
