Fresh hand-rolled sushi. A juice bar with made-to-order smoothies. A hair and nail salon. It’s certainly not a typical drug store. But these are among the amenities that Walgreens will offer in the former Borders space when it debuts a 24,000 square foot flagship this fall in Downtown Crossing. The Illinois drugstore chain will model the Boston location after two flagships it recently opened in New York City and Chicago.

well I was hoping for a grocery store like Trader Joe's because I work downtown & that is something Downtown Crossing doesn't have- already had 2 CVS stores but I knew it wouldn't happen because Mayor Menino doesn't want supermarkets downtown
Great - another soulless large box store - used to be when you went to Boston, there were different stores than NYC, DC, Philly, etc
Mmmmmmm . . . . Walgreen's sushi. It's gotta be the best!
A much wiser move would have been to put this concept at the vacated Borders space on Boylston Street in the Back Bay and to close the embarrassment of a store across from the Prudential Center. The Downtown Crossing location will be especially weak on weekends and loaded with extra security costs. I just don't see the financial district crowd going over there unless they need to renew a cell phone contract. Walgreens may sell some umbrellas to tourists on the Freedom Trail if the street hawkers don't snag them first. What incentive did the city throw out to get this done?
