Houston pipeline company has begun exploring the expansion of a major regional pipeline to bring abundant supplies of natural gas to New England from nearby shale formations, a move designed to help lower heating and electricity costs here. Spectra Energy estimates that increasing pipeline capacity in Southern New England by about 15 percent would save gas and electric customers - including roughly 3 million in Massachusetts - up to $651 million a year.

Do you hear that sound, Cape Wind? It's the sound of the air going out of your hopes to impose millions of dollars of rate rate increases on electricity consumers and millions more from governmlent subsidies to pay for your boondoggle. Real savings, real jobs, really dependable energy. Hopefully the AG's "really close look" will be better than their review of the effect that Cape Wind's proposal would have on ratepayers.
Wow, talk about putting all your eggs in one basket! Over half our electricity and much of our home heating now comes from natural gas, a good deal of which passes through a single piece of pipe. Just imagine a break down in the pipeline....just a few days....in January. Maybe laying a second pipeline along the right of way would be a better idea.
