Farmers put focus on retailing

Agriculture’s new retail-oriented entrepreneurs put the focus on a diversity of products, savvy marketing, community ties

Chris Kurth started farming in the late 1990s after graduating from Williams College with a utopian view and little experience in the argicultural business. That effort fizzled, so when Kurth, 37, launched Siena Farms in Sudbury six years ago, he got serious about marketing. Today, Kurth and other farmers in the region are finding success by becoming more diverse - offering everything from baby lettuces to pasture-raised lamb to cheeses to farm tours.
