Area merchants cheered the news last week that state officials are considering requiring Amazon to start collecting sales tax on purchases made from Massachusetts, saying it would make their businesses more competitive with the nation’s biggest online retailer. But is a 6.25 percent price hike really enough to discourage some consumers from shopping through Amazon? Recent studies suggest shoppers are motivated to avoid the tax, but a Globe comparison found Amazon’s prices are generally lower even when sales tax is added.
