While Boston’s skyline is noticeably devoid of the gaudy lights and displays that are the hallmark of other cities, the emergence of a striking new breed of outdoor video displays may represent a timid step toward a flashier future for a city with historically austere taste. The new high-definition marquees, the first of which was erected in September outside the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center , feature a mix of video advertising, visitor information, community messages, and art. More displays are now being planned.
