The city will install 400 solar-powered BigBelly trash and recycling receptacles around town over the next year. And these aren’t just any waste bins. They have built-in compactors that squeeze trash so each bin can hold more garbage — and they’re going to be free for the city.

I'm not sure what a good idea this is. I can see the compactor units getting jammed up with gunk constantly, and the solar charger or batteries dying, and not working half the time. what about in the winter, when there is 4 hours of feeble light in the sky, and the panels get snowed or iced on, will they still work then? I bet these things become a big boondoogle in 2-3 years, and get removed as a huge waste of money..
