Stocks rise as airline hikes stick

JP Morgan analyst Jaime Baker said airlines have succeeded in four out of eight attempts to raise fares this year.

Shares of United Continental Holdings Inc. and other airlines gained following successful attempts in recent days to raise fares to cover fuel costs. Southwest Airlines raised fares Friday on short routes by $10 per round trip; others matched the increase. Southwest’s shares rose 3.4 percent, while Delta Air Lines gained 3.6 percent. US Airways rose 5 percent.
