It’s small consolation perhaps, but local Labor Day travelers who find themselves gridlocked this weekend can take heart: Traffic will likely be worse in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.

So concludes a new study from INRIX Inc., a Washington state company that provides traffic data to auto manufacturers and companies that operate truck fleets. According to the study, Boston area traffic over Labor Day weekend will be the fifth worst nationwide.

‘‘As a gateway city as well as a popular destination, Boston will experience some of the worst traffic on the Friday getaway day,”  Jim Bak, the director of community relations for INRIX, said in a statement.  ‘‘Friday traffic will be like one long rush hour starting at 7:30 a.m. and lasting well into the evening.  If you can leave Saturday, do it.  If not, be prepared for a long travel day.’’

Boston travelers going to either Portland, Maine, or the Connecticut casinos should expect their trips to take twice as long as normal, INRIX said.

As for those looking to flee to the Cape, they can expect their trip to take three times longer than normal with traffic congestion peaking on key routes at 5 p.m. Friday, INRIX said.
