Supervalu closing dozens of its supermarkets, but none are reported to be in New England

Supervalu Inc., which operates Shaw’s and Star Market supermarket chains, said it will close about 60 underperforming or non-strategic stores during this fiscal year. The company plans to shutter 22 Save-A-Lot locations, 27 Alberstons stores, four ACME supermarkets, and one previously announced Jewel-Osco location.

None of the grocery stores identified are based in New England.

Supervalu said it plans to close an additional eight stores, but did not release details because of what it said are ongoing contractual discussions. All eight are expected to close by late February.

Supervalu, which has battled declining revenues for several years, said this summer it was conducting a strategic review of alternatives for the business.
