As they brace for an era of shrinking government funds and mounting pressure to cut prices for medical services, Massachusetts hospitals face growing financial strains.
Two dozen — more than a third of the state’s total — lost money last year, including rural community hospitals, urban safety net hospitals, and even affiliates of renowned academic medical centers, according to a new report from the Division of Health Care Finance and Policy.

Holywood films always seem to always lose money too.
This is not a cause for panic or celebration just yet. It could be that some hospitals will fail in the long term, but losing money could also spur efficiencies that would not only save money, but provide better health care.
I've been in the hospital several times in the last 3 years, and I see inefficiency everywhere. Eliminating some of the inefficiencies might save only a few dollars, but lots of small savings can add up to large ones.
If we didnt' have the state plan and if the President didn't have his plan coming in and things went back to what they were before the state plan would we be better off. I know that medicare is already cutting. My supplemental plan is cutting its benefits that it has paid for in the past.
