Stocks falter on report; Apple nears $700

Stocks fell following a new sign of a slowdown in the economy and worries over Europe’s struggle to keep its currency union intact. A New York manufacturing survey suggested conditions continued to weaken in September. This on the heels of a Fed report that industrial production fell in August. Apple hit a new high on advance iPhone 5 sales.
