Alternative paper’s longtime publisher adjusts to changing times
The Boston Phoenix, the city’s venerable alternative weekly newspaper, is disappearing this week, to be replaced by a new glossy weekly called, simply, the Phoenix. Beyond signalling the end of a storied chapter in Boston media history, the merger the weekly and its sister publication, Stuff, is one of several recent steps by the paper’s parent company to trim operations and refocus on its core businesses, company executives say. But succeeding in a rapidly changing media environment could be a challenge.
