In architectural renderings, the building about to rise next to the Zakim Bridge is designed to look like a massive waterfall, with a jagged column of glass cascading along the middle of its facade.
The building’s novel design — inspired by the nearby Charles River — is the latest creation of EF Education First, a for-profit company that offers academic classes and programs around the world. The company wants the dramatic look of the 10-story office complex in Cambridge’s NorthPoint development to shake up the area’s architecture and call attention to the firm’s growth.

This EF Education First building looks like an updated Fort Knox, period. It is a square, squat behemoth with some architect's fiddling on its front in an attempt to besell the idea of a "waterfall" in the form of what the Globe calls "a jagged column of glass cascading". Ugly, ugly, ugly... just another corporation with publicly unknown executives trying to be noticed as champions of "art". Ugly, ugly, ugly, and if built, it will soon be eminently unnoticed and forgettable.
This would definitely be in the top 50% of attractive buildings at an office park in Woburn. What is the Globe thinking writing this nonsense?
While the waterfall element looks cool, overall the building looks pretty ho hum... another square office building. I'm not seeing the "dramatic look" that's going to "shake up the area's architecture".
Terrible building.
I hope the actual building looks more inspiring than the renderings. It looks like a surburban office park building that sprung a leak.

The renderings look like a conventional, spec-built, suburban office building, circa 1986, with an incongruous bit of flashy glass applique trying to give it some pizazz. This is certainly nothing deserving the breathless commentary in this piece. It's as if your insurance agent showed up at your door wearing his $89 Men's Warehouse suit, and a red silk scarf. Best of luck to EF and their employees, and thanks for growing your business in MA, but don't be disappointed to find youself working in just an ordinary office.
Inspired by the Charles River, huh? Then why does it look almost exactly like this building the same firm built in Sweden?
