Mass. adds smartphone app for emergency alerts

When a bad storm is approaching fast, take cover — and grab your smartphone.

Massachusetts emergency management officials will now be sending out warnings about hurricanes, floods, blizzards, and other potential dangers, even terrorist threats, to state residents via a mobile app developed by a Nashua technology start-up.

A really great idea, but all I could think about is "Great, now we are ready for the apocolypse." Feels a bit "Hunger Games-ready". I bet there are people with food storage cellars who would love to have this at their fingertips at all times. I'd like to think that if there is a major safety threat and we read the Boston Globe/boston.com or engage in any form of social media (or heck, social activity), we'll know about it. :)
