Rapid7 acquires security startup in Seattle

Boston security software firm Rapid7 Inc. has acquired Mobilisafe Inc., a two-year-old Seattle start-up that provides risk management services for mobile devices.

The deal gives Rapid7 a foothold in the marketplace of providing network security services to companies whose employees use their own smartphones, tablets, and laptops for work purposes as part of the growing bring-your-own-device, or BYOD, trend.

“The trend of BYOD highlights one of the greatest challenges organizations face in security, which is identifying all the devices being used to access corporate data, and understanding the associated threats so they can be mitigated,” said Mike Tuchen, chief executive of Rapid7, in a press release issued Tuesday. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

This is the second acquisition by Rapid7, a 12-year-old company headquartered in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood with 280 employees at nine offices around the world. Rapid7 received a $50 million investment last year from the Palo Alto, Calif., firm Technology Crossover Ventures in part to make acquisitions.
