NEW YORK — Barnes & Noble Inc. says devices customers use to swipe credit and debit cards were tampered with in 63 stores in nine states, including Massachusetts.

The company is warning customers to check for unauthorized transactions and to change their personal identification numbers. It hasn’t said how many accounts may have been compromised.
