Shaw’s says it’s laying off 700

Blaming a weak economy and fierce competition from other retailers, Shaw’s Supermarkets of West Bridgewater said Friday that it’s laying off 700 workers.

“We are operating in a tough competitive landscape, a challenging economy, and we’ve experienced sales losses,” said Shaw’s spokesman Steve Sylven. Jobs will be cut at each of the 169 Shaw’s and Star Market stores in New England, said Sylven, leaving the company with a total of 17,000 employees after the layoffs are completed.

Shaw's Supermarkets is losing market share, as are Stop and Shop and other supermarket retailers to the Market Basket chaun because they either cannot or will not respond to Market Basket's lower prices.  My personal observation is that Market Basket stores are brimming with customers while any others I may enter have many less people.  all you have to is observe the checkout lines.

This is capitalism folks.  you respond to the competition or you die.  Looks like shaw's has chosen to die.

I can't believe that some people equate this Supermarket issue to President Obama !  They probably blame him for the rise in gasoline prices too, not to mention Hurricane Sandy.  The major question there was proposed by former president Clinton when he asked why would you give the economy of this country back to the people who ruined it ?  Yes, things have not improved as rapidly as we would like, but they have improved.  The fact remains that the economic hole the Republicans dug is so deep Spider Man could not have been able to get all the way out in four years.

Thats right blame Pres. Bush....that is old rhetoric....just remember that from 2007 you had

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as leaders in congress.....and for 2.5yrs complete control with WH and congress....Pres. Bush did not add 20 million to food stamps and 3.6million  to SSI enroll and 7.9% unemployment with gas prices also double.......Fast & Furious and Benghazi with lies and cover-ups.....All on Pres. Obama's watch....he owns it...be a man and take the blame....time to grow up.

an according to Pres. Obama the economy is improving.

This isn't about the economy.  It's about poor business decisions.  The parent company made unwise decisions regarding expansion and failed to mainitain  their existing stores.

According to the *numbers* the economy is improving.

MARKET BASKET has a great niche: No frills & low prices all the time. Sales are NOT enough to keep people coming back. In this struggling economy, consumers want $avings in EVERY aisle, PERIOD.

Shaws and Star Market will continue to lose market share unless they make a fundamental change in their pricing strategy. Shaws/Star are high-priced chains, depending on loyalty/rewards cards, contests, and gimmicks to bring shoppers through the door. If they followed an everyday low pricing strategy, they would attract more customers. Laying off employees, if it results in longer checkout lines, will only mean more shoppers will go to the competition.

You're correct.  Pres. Bush did not add 20 million to food stamps and 3.6million to SSI,  7.9 % unemployment, doubling of gas prices.  He merely created the conditions that caused all that.  "Nuff said.

Be a man?  Take the blame?  Get a brain !
