Office Depot, the number two office supply company, posted better-than-expected core third-quarter earnings by cutting costs, despite an ongoing deterioration in sales, Dow Jones reported. Office Depot swung to a loss with large write-downs that went up against a year-earlier period with big tax benefits, but its adjusted bottom line was more profitable than expected.
