Japanese biotech Human Metabolome Technologies opening first US office in Cambridge

Human Metabolome Technologies, a Japanese biotechnology company, said Thursday that it is opening its first US location in Cambridge.

The Kendall Square site, which includes laboratory space, has just one employee now, but the company said it expects to hire 20 by 2015.

Human Metabolome chose Cambridge to gain access to the area’s many pharmaceutical companies and research institutions.

“Cambridge provides the perfect combination of academic and industrial arenas, especially associated with the field of life sciences, food engineering and environmental studies,” president Tsutomu Hoshiba said in a statement.

Human Metabolome, based in Tsuruoka, Japan, currently has 50 employees in two Japanese offices.
