Comcast marks 1st anniversary of upgrading data services in Boston’s Innovation District

Boston’s Innovation District has become a trendy business address, and Comcast Corp. says its high-speed data network for the area is one of many reasons why.

Comcast is marking the one-year anniversary of its completion of wiring up the district with its highest level of data services for business customers. One new company in the area --- and a Comcast customer --- is Allen & Gerritsen, an ad agency of 126 employees that moved into the Innovation District in mid-August.

Explaining why the agency decided to relocate from Watertown, chief executive Andrew Graff said: “As an agency, we’re always searching for ‘what’s next, and by moving into the Innovation District, we’ve inserted ourselves into the city’s entrepreneurial heartbeat. Our Innovation District address will be integral for a&g’s continued business development, given the international range of our client roster, and for attracting and keeping top talent.”

Attracting small businesses is a key part of Comcast’s strategy.

During a recent conference call with investors to discuss third-quarter earnings, Comcast vice chairman and chief financial officer Michael J. Angelakis said: “We continue to experience strength in our Business Services Group as well, which was our second largest contributor to our cable revenue growth in the third quarter, with revenue increasing 34 percent to $621 million. The small end of this market, or businesses less than 20 employees, now accounts for 85 percent of business services revenue and continues to be a meaningful driver of growth. We are also making good progress with the mid-sized businesses as well as this revenue base now represents 15% of the group’s revenue and is growing rapidly off a smaller base.”
