Retirement destinations require family considerations

Formany retirees, the wish to relocate to warmer locales is superceded by a desire to stay close to family

Approaching retirement a few years ago, Joanna and Roger Beam began searching for a new home by looking in the usual direction: south.

“There was a house in North Carolina that we really liked, and we almost bought a house on a river in Virginia,” said Joanna Beam, 75.

I considered moving to Kendal in Hanover NH — but it dawned on me that it would be like going back to boarding school, except this time the only graduation would be by death :)) Also, I'd hate to have to give up easy access to NYC and opera and the MFA and the Athenaeum and Beacon Hill Seminars and most of all, the BSO. Plus, I like to travel, and getting from the tiny Lebanon airport or to Logan via the bus would add a lot of hassle. So I signed up with Beacon Hill Village, and I have been really happy with the service and the freedom BHV gives me.
