The Massachusetts Port Authority on Monday opened a $23.5 million bypass road for commercial traffic at Logan International Airport.

The two-lane road, between Logan and Chelsea Street, near the Chelsea Street Bridge, will take thousands of vehicles off residential streets every year, according to Massport.

The road is named for Martin A. Coughlin, an East Boston community organizer who advocated for a bypass road four decades ago.
