About 45,000 Massachusetts residents, or one-fifth of those who are out of work, will lose their unemployment benefits on Dec. 29 unless Congress renews a program designed to help people who have struggled to find jobs, officials said.
The state mailed letters on Monday alerting thousands of job seekers that their benefits would disappear just after Christmas. Those most affected by the cuts are record numbers of long-term unemployed, or those who are unemployed 27 weeks or more.

"Unemployment benefits help spur the economy" - That's right Mr. Congressman, take away all incentive to work - just engage in more and more handouts, more and more spending. How about working to create some JOBS instead of giving away more and more entitlemenets. Oh wait. I forgot. You're a Democrat and if you don't give something to somebody, you won't be doing YOUR JOB.
What a disgrace.
Just curious....Have you ever lost your job as part of corporate downsizing?
Yes, unemployment compensation another form of welfare for the well off as the examples in the article demonstrate. However, I imagine the grocer and the landlord are happy for it.
You suggest "working to create some jobs". What sort of jobs do you think the governemnt can create? Wouldn't spending on jobs creation be another form of welfare..just a different set of recipients?
Please pardon the typos. Not enough coffee yet...
The important thing is to protect Donald Trump's millions.
the ultimate disgrace is we are 4 years into Obama and the unemployment market still stinks. And he has no plan to make it better except tax the "rich"
What's an "unemployment market?"
Last I checked the job market is steadily improving.
Do you work, BTW? You seem to be on here 24x7.
You seem to be a member of the leisure class yourself, esf.
Along with unemployment benefits, I wonder if there are programs for the unemployed to get further training or education? If they need further skills or education to be employable, that would be money well spent. The unemployment offices are overwhelmed and not much help. Our work force needs to continue to hone new skills - are there programs to do that?
Yes, here in MA, there are extensive unemployment training and job search assistance programs.

p.s. How do know "The unemployment offices are overwhelmed and not much help.?"
Everything I've heard says otherwise.
The woman in the article has been unemployed for a year and a half and has done occasional freelance work. I know someone like that...he doesn't want to take a job until he finds one that pays more than the one he got laid off from...it is a down economy (despite what Obama keeps saying), you are gonna make less. Accept that and get back to work. It stinks, but it is the reality that people voted for...
So all people who can't find jobs are hold out for better pay? Wow. We should just deport them all. Oh wait, wrong talking point.
These folks will be thoroughly annoyed after casting their vote for the Democrats!
Knowing how people voted is a pretty impressive talent. Do you have any others?
