Many Mass. restaurants still serve mislabeled fish

A year after a Globe investigation found restaurants and stores across Massachusetts were routinely selling cheaper, lower-quality fish than they promised customers, a new round of DNA testing shows the vast majority are still mislabeling seafood.

Ken’s Steak House in Framingham again served Pacific cod instead of a more expensive Atlantic species. Slices of fish sold as white tuna at Sea To You Sushi in Brookline were again actually escolar, an oily species nicknamed the “ex-lax’’ fish by some in the industry because it can cause digestion problems. H Mart, an Asian supermarket chain found to have sold mislabeled red snapper last year, this time was selling inexpensive freshwater Nile perch as pricier ocean grouper at its Burlington store.

scallops are frequently misrepresented on many menues., and fish counters at supermarkets where the prices run about 15.00 to 16.. per pound. After having had real sea scallops, it should be clear that you are not getting the real deal.

Am I missing something in the graphic that compares Atlantic Cod vs. Pacific Cod? It would seem by the graphic that Atlantic Cod is cheaper per pound than the Pacific Cod? So why would a restaurant substitute Pacific Cod if it is more than twice the cost per pound? And I am not sure why the graphic compares the price of frozen Atlantic Cod to fresh Pacific Cod when the article writes about the problem being the other way around. What am I missing?

Graphic is correct, $3.60/lb Pacific Cod, $7.44/lb Atlantic Cod.

Graphic has been corrected since reading it online early Sunday morning. The information regarding Pacific versus Atlantic cod prices was reversed at that time. Now it makes much more sense.
