Cynosure says it now has an advantage in “a large and vastly underserved market.”

Cynosure Inc., a Westford company that specializes in laser- and light-based treatments for aesthetic procedures, has won Food and Drug Administration clearance for a work station designed for the removal of tattoos and benign pigmented lesions. That lets Cynosure begin selling PicoSure laser work stations to dermatologists and plastic surgeons in early 2013. Cynosure says an estimated 20 percent of the 45 million Americans with at least one tattoo want to have one removed.
