Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. will be adding a boxed warning to the US label of its best-selling drug, Incivek, following reports of at least two deaths of patients who developed severe skin reactions after taking Incivek in combination with two other drugs to treat hepatitis C. The new alert, sometimes called a “Black Box warning” because it is framed in a black box on the drug label, is designed to give more prominence to existing label warnings and to a plan Cambridge-based Vertex developed for managing rashes when its drug was in clinical trials.
