LinkedIn is now the preferred tool for recruiters

Maria Varmazis had maintained her profile on the professional networking site LinkedIn for a few years, promoting her career experience and skills as a content strategist for a Quincy online education and marketing firm.

Then last year, Rapid7 Inc., a fast-growing Boston security software company, contacted her through her LinkedIn account. A short time later, she accepted a job offer as a marketing content manager at the company.

Any good Human Resources professional knows that the use of photos in recruiting is a practice that raises a red flag, and any company that uses such a practice such be avoided - it is not the kind of professional establishment that you want to be employed by. Photos obviously provide information such as race, sex, and age that an employer wouldn't even be able to ask for when screening candidates, and employers, advisors, and recruiters who encourage you to submit a photo are not the kind of "professionals" or "experts" that you want to be associated with. It's a 1950's practice that is out-dated, inappropriate, could be used to screen out candidates in a discriminatory manner and therefore could be argued to be illegal if requested or required (so then why would you volunteer it?).  It also contradicts the statement that LinkedIn is not "Face" Book.

Not only am I teaching this as a part of my public relations and my social media communication classes at Curry College. I am presenting a free webinar with my colleagues from BurrellesLuce on the subject of social media visibility as a "non-option" for job seekers today. Would love to have Boston Globe readers join us on Tuesday, January 15, from 1-2PM. Here's the link to sign up: http://preview.tinyurl.com/bh22tg6.

Miscellaneous friends, family and acquaintances keep trying to link to me on LinkedIn.  I know that LinkedIn isn't Facebook but a lot of people dont' seem to get the distinction.

I have the same problem. None of my family members are in my field, so I just tell them that I reserve LinkedIn for professional contacts and to friend me on Facebook. Anyone that I don't want to link to is simply ignored after that.
