Care.com buys Parents in a Pinch

Care.com, a Waltham company that helps both consumers and the employees of corporate clients get access to child care and other services, said it has bought Parents in a Pinch in an acquisition that will allow it to offer additional services and broaden its customer base.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The primary business of Care.com is to connect families with caregivers. The company offers a suite of online tools that list and sort providers of child care, senior care, pet care, housekeeping, tutoring, and other services. It has approximately 7 million users in more than 15 countries.

Currently headquartered in Brookline, Parents in a Pinch provides back-up child care services. If a nanny calls in sick, for example, a mother can turn to Parents in a Pinch to get a qualified substitute nanny at short notice.

As a result of the acquisition, Parents in a Pinch and its 15-person staff are relocating to Waltham; no layoffs are planned, said Care.com, whose US employee head count was 370 before purchasing Parents in a Pinch.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Care.com, Parents in a Pinch will continue to be run by co-founders Barbara Siegel and Davida Manon, Care.com said.

The deal gives Care.com additional services to offer to such corporate clients as Google Inc. and Facebook Inc., a Care.com spokeswoman said.

The two companies also have different client rosters. Parents in a Pinch clients include Bain & Company, Inc., Boston Children’s Hospital, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and TripAdvisor.

The acquisition also offers Care.com an opportunity to offer its services to Parents in a Pinch clients.

Back-up care is a critical component in that mix, and with Parents in a Pinch, Care.com is now uniquely positioned to provide professional in-home back-up care assistance as an adjacency to our existing services.”
