Citing fire risk, FAA grounds Dreamliners

Order follows emergency landing in Japan

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday grounded Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner because of a potential risk of fire from its batteries, following an emergency landing of an All Nippon plane in Japan caused by a malfunctioning battery.

That followed last week’s battery fire in an empty Japan Airlines Dreamliner in Boston.

I'm a huge fan of technology.  Even more so when it has a focus on conservation over consumption.  LiPo batteries seemed very promising and they are a huge advancement over traditional technologies.  That said, we have had two LiPo events in our house.  the first was a simple headset battery that expanded and broke the headset wide open.  The second was a MacBook Pro battery.  That one was a close call.  It was just sitting on a shelf not being used or charged for at least 6 months.  One day it simply burst open and when we smelled it from downstairs and then found it, it was hot. I'm still a fan but now I'm very cautious of what products have the larger LiPo batteries in our house.
