The push to discover effective treatments is exciting. The synergy that could result from so much work being done regarding one disease in the Boston area is fascinating. On the other hand, the spectre of stockholders and other Wall Street types salivating in the wings is more than a little unsettling. Capitalism is built on the idea that people need some compensation for funding important ventures. But the balance is seriously open to question. How much profit can exist in healthcare before it harms the fundamental goal of caring for people? How much does this type of situation play into the transfer of wealth to the 1%? What kind of social price is there to be paid for drugs that have a price tag which is totally beyond the average means? If the patient is unable to pay the price, that means society will, in some way, foot the bill. This holds true for the entire healthcare world, not just this one disease.
