American Airlines pulls back at Logan

Nonstop flights have dwindled and last international route, London, to be eliminated

American Airlines is slipping away from Boston.

Logan International Airport’s biggest carrier for most of the past decade has shrunk to the fifth-largest, carrying just 11 percent of the airport’s passengers last year, down from a peak of 21 percent in 2004. The carrier now flies to just six cities nonstop from Boston, down from 33 in 2003. At the end of March, the number of American nonstop destinations out of Boston will fall even further when the carrier cuts its only remaining international flight, to London.

And so continues the effects of worldwide peak oil, and especially the end of cheap oil, on the air travel industry.  With the developing world (China) continuing to outbid us for more of the remaining oil, even our own domestic oil, oil prices will continue to remain high and even the newest, most fuel-efficient airliners won't allow the airline companies to maintain all their flights as they are now.
