Guns fly off the shelves in New England

Worry about new controls spurs sales

Gun manufacturers and retailers throughout New England are struggling to keep up with surging demand as buyers, worried their options may soon be limited, snap up firearms and ammunition.

Shops say they have sold out of many popular gun models, including variations of the AR-15-style rifle used in last month’s mass shootings in Newtown, Conn. Some retailers have resorted to capping the number of bullets customers can buy in an effort to preserve dwindling inventories, or taken to marking up prices.

The Dems did more to put guns on the streets than the NRA ever did.

As much as I am loathe to admit that, I think you may be right.  Sad!

People love their guns more than their children.

tell that to the mother in Georgia who saved her kids lives because she had a gun, absolutely stupid comment.

Tell that to the 5740 Kids killed and 34387 kids injured 2008-2009. Who's stupid.

It's a sickness and it's sad the number of people infected by it.

Something is rotten in Denmark.  Truly it is just a tragedy.  what made us like this or were we always of the Wild West menality.  I remember when I was young loving rifile target practice.  It was fun.  But NO way as an adult did I grow up with the desire to own an arsenal.  When I was a child I acted as a child.  As an adult I put away childish things.  Do people really feel THAT threatend?  Perhaps they do.  This is our American tragedy.

Maybe making Viagra and Cialis available without a prescription would help?

One doesn't buy bullets.  One buys cartridges which is a bullet plus a casing and a firing charge.  I see these reporters don't know firearms all that well.  I don't suppose many Globe writers do.

I actually don't own any guns myself, but I do know what ammunition is composed of.

Replies

If you were drafted into the military or signed up to avoid the draft, you know about firearms. I do, but I've never owned one and never will.

Most educated young people today don't join the military so they don't have intimate knowledge of firearms unless they have enough interest to educate themselves.

This one buys bullets.

This one buys casings.

This one buys primers

This one buys powder.

This one makes cartridges.

I neither own, nor want to own, a gun.  However, people are justifiably afraid of government over reach.  Democrats have a disregard for the Constitution of the US which guarantgees the right to own firearms.  The Second Amendment is there to protect citizens from tyrannical government and the people will not easily give up that right.

Replies

Government overreach that requires a gun, or could be fixed by a gun, is not a justifiable or rational position in today's world.  Any fears of that sort simply are not supported by facts.

Anyone who worries about "tyrannical government" shouldn't be allowed to own a gun. Do you actually think that a handgun, or an AR-15-style rifle, is going to be of any use against, say, the United States Marine Corp? The Second Amendment was written for a United States that no longer exists, and has not existed for a long time. We now have a national, standing army that will protect the US much better than state militias.

It is safe to assume that some of the people who read this article are among those who have either made a recent gun purchase, or tried to make a recent gun purchase.  And certainly other gun owners are reading now.  I am also betting that most of you gun owners don't envision yourselves as initiating a gun event with another person.  You see yourselves as arming for defensive protection rather  than an offensive attack.  But except for very rare occasions, the only time you would need a gun for protection is from another person with a gun.  Therefore, by definition, gun owners are each others worst enemies.  When you walk into a gun show, or gun store, you would be more likely to be standing next to the person from whom you need protection than you are when standing in some other spot.

As a person who doesn't own a gun, and a person who will never physically attack someone else with a fist, let alone a gun, I promise that you won't need your gun to protect yourself from me.  I hope you remember that and can act on that at all times in the future, even if you've been drinking, doing drugs, suddenly very fearful, or otherwise distracted in your decision-making.

I also pray that I don't happen to be in the middle of a firefight between a couple of gun owners in the middle of the town square, and end up being an innocent victim of two people who have totally lost control of their senses.

This is the world that you gun owners are creating when you race to arm yourselves.  More guns make everyone less safe.  They make no one more safe, including the gun owners.

You have very narrow view of guns and gun ownership. It's not the legal gun owners that present the problem. It's the criminal that is breaking into a house armed with an illegal gun, knife, or anything else that could seriously injure the occupants. Guns are also used for hunting and target shooting. If you're worried about the race to arms then you should call your elected official and tell them to stop trampling on the 2nd amendment. I assure you the race would stop.

I have not read about any "gunfights" in the middle of any town squares?  Where in the heck do you live?  I am sure the BG would have made a shootout like that front page news!

A gun is also extremely handy for protection against people with baseball bats, knives, tire irons, all manner of nasty things they want to use to beat your brains out of your skull with.

Rare occasions?  The only reason you think having to defend yourself is "rare" is because attacks have become commonplace.  They are not "news" anymore, you don't see them in the BG unless there is something "interesting" about them.  Getting your brains beat in at a parking garage is just not news, especially if the perp is not apprehended.

I am a gun owner and a target shooter.  Center-fire rounds can be expensive, so I reload my own.  I live in New Hampshire, a state with resonable gun laws, but buy my bullets (projectiles) from a company in MA.  Eventhough I could drive to the company, I can't transport the bullets legally.  If all of the restrictive gun laws lowered crime, they would make sense.  More laws will do nothing except make guns and ammo more expensive for all.  Early gun safety training would make more sense and cost way less than trying to enforce some of the ludicrous laws on the books.

Demagoguery in action: big business using fear to stampede the unenlightened to buy useless crap they don't really need. Cowards being pushed around by bullies like the gun lobby, which supports death-dealers like Smith and Wesson. The 2nd Amendment is an anachronism.  Take look at some of the ridiculous old laws from that same era that are still on the books. YOu need a gun to ptrotect you from your own government?  Horse hockey.  This ain't Syria- never has been, never will be.

Death-dealers. . . Ooooo, how dramatic!  Pssst, they also support the death dealing US military, so go easy on that one, ok?

Never has been, never will be.  Really?  You do any other fortune telling tricks?  Mine says that it will eventually reduce itself to tyranny.  Mine is better than yours, it is Mark IV, time rift modified, Shift Enabled Galaxy Model.

After shaving his head into a mohawk, Travis attends a public rally where he attempts to assassinate Senator Palantine, but Secret Service agents notice him and he flees without taking a shot. He returns to his apartment and then drives to the East Village, where he confronts Sport. Travis shoots him, then walks into Iris’ brothel and shoots off the bouncer's fingers. After Sport shoots Travis in the neck, wounding him, Travis shoots him dead. Another thug appears and shoots Travis in the arm, but Travis reveals his sleeve gun and kills the thug. The bouncer continues to harass Travis, causing Travis to shoot him in the head and kill him. As a horrified Iris cries, Travis attempts suicide but, out of ammunition, resigns himself to a sofa until police arrive. When they do, he places his index finger against his temple gesturing the act of shooting himself. Recuperating, Travis receives a letter from Iris's parents who thank him for saving her and the media hail him as a hero. Travis then returns to his job and encounters Betsy as a fare. She discusses his newly found fame, but he denies being a hero and drops her off for free. He glances anxiously at her in his rear view mirror as he drives away. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver

WOW!  This article really got the anti gunners undies in a twist.  I suppose it frustrates them, knowing there are literally thousands upon thousands of people who do not agree with them.  Actually it is millions, cause this event is not peculiar to MA, it has happened all across the country.

But, like good little liberals they scream that the 2nd amendment is out of date.

They cry that people are being "bullied" into buying guns by big business and the hateful NRA. (Bullied is the new rock em, sock em word of the liberals)

They assert that gun owners shoot each other, ignoring that criminals actually do the shooting.

They howl the tired old "less guns make the world a safer place" mantra.

One claims that if a gun owner believes a gov could become tyrannical, that is evidence enough to prevent gun ownership.  Twisted liberal thinking at its best, or worst.

Claims are made that the US Marine Corps will shoot the citizens of this country.  If I were a leader ordering the citizens of this country to be shot, I would start worrying about the USMC shooting me, not the other way around.  (but liberals assume everyone is on their side, they always have a "majority", imaginary counts in their world)

Childish remarks are made about manhood, ignoring the fact that female ownership is the fastest growing segment of the firearms industry.   This is the tactic of trying to shame someone into submission.

One states that people love their guns more than their children.  Never stops to realize that people have guns because they love their children and want to protect them.  But that sounded like a great thing to say in an attempt to shame.

And one says that Democrats have done more to sell guns than the NRA.  AMEN.

You gun hating, sloganeering, fear mongering, reality denying liberals have done an excellent job of convincing people they NEED guns, to protect themselves from YOUR incredibly stupid ideas.

I do not believe that the Westboro Baptist Church should be allowed to protest soldiers funerals but I believe that that the 1st Amendment protection of such actions is more important than the action itself. I dont necessarily think a tyrannical government is going to take my guns but constitutional scholars have consistently stated that if the reason for an original right from the Bill of Rights doesn't exist anymore, the right still exists. Ask the people of New Orleans post Katrina if they think the government can provide security under all conditions for their families. Ask the two Duxbury cops who had their homes invaded in broad daylight if this is a rare occasion. Lot's of childish babble on the forum today but no constructive dialogue. "Death dealers", comparing a right from the Bill of Rights to a "ridiculous old law", this accomplishes nothing.

The anti gunner were having fun earlier this morning running amuck. Once they get going, they think they have a "majority" and see if they can top each other with crazy ideas, sort of like the nutty governors in the NE.
