SAN FRANCISCO — Students may soon be able to receive college credit for the free online courses reshaping higher education.
The American Council on Education said Thursday that it is recommending degree credit for five courses offered by Coursera, a Mountain View, Calif., company that provides ‘‘massive open online courses’’ from leading universities.

The on-line courses ought to be free, but the exams/tests ought to have a charge placed upon them.
The U.S. education system is a bloody mess and quickly going down-hill with the notion that everyone ought to pass their grade, so as not to harm the student's self esteem. However, the student goes on into health care and medical errors sky-rocket, or human resource management and believes their friends are capable of every open position (hence incompetence), or into banking (everyone qualifies for a mortgage) . . . the list goes on and on.
Established universities want to cash in on the BIG, BIG money going to Internet universities who provide courses and issue degrees not worth the cost of printing them.
