American Science and Engineering Inc. is the latest Massachusetts defense contractor to be hit by US military spending cuts, which have already taken a toll on some of the state’s biggest employers and are threatening tens of thousands of jobs.
The Billerica maker of bomb-detection equipment used by the military and law enforcement agencies around the world has laid off 40 people, or 10 percent of its workforce, as it prepares for even deeper reductions in orders from the Pentagon.

Sure is a weird economy this U.S.. is running... Barry the O, the great campaign gabber, slings stuff about manufacturing jobs needed to resurrect the recession-battered economy. Yet, Barry's defense department - don't forget how much and how often this guy brags that he is the commander-in-chief or military potentate - is cutting its spending to the tune of forcing private defense companies to lay off significant numbers of employees. And the financial gimmick due Mar. 1 is supposed to be insurmountable, with Barry the O apparently blaming everybody but himself for it, with lots of Barry the O administration defense department entities forced into deep spending cuts, with more resulting job losses. And this is the saviour of the American economy?
You do know, don't you, that you've no credibility (except maybe to the usual rabid dogs of reactionaryism who post here regularly) when you use idiot slang such as "Barry the O" along with your trite observations (speaking of which, the rebuttal is "who-cares-1940"'s, below. Read and learn.)
Isn't it ironic. Those who want the federal deficit brought under control and advocate spending cuts as a major method of doing so, but when the cuts are proposed, they moan the loss of jobs.
No matter where cuts are made in Federal programs, there will be a resulting loss of jobs. The only other choice is to allow the government to continue running up deficits in order to subsidize the economy, including defense industries that are no longer needed.
