Utilities’ handling of the hundreds of thousands of outages caused by the winter storm that battered Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod last weekend was largely improved compared with other recent storms that caused widespread power losses and provoked denunciation from government officials and irate customers, according to many state and local officials.
Together, NStar and National Grid mustered more than 3,000 crews to replace fallen utility poles, rehang wire cables, and repair blown transformers that left more than 600,000 customers without power because of the storm, which dumped more than 2 feet of snow in some parts of the state.

Nobody likes to be without what we have become use to, i. e. power. However, this latest blizzard with its snow and hurricane force winds was too much for anybody to handle. It would have been dangerous for the utility crews to be out on Friday night and Saturday in those coditions. We have a governor and a congressman who were complaining that the utility crews didn't get out fast enough. With all due respect to Governor Patrick and Congressman Keating, I did not see either one of them donning a utility outfit and climbing up a pole to assist the crew; nor did I see any of your politician buddies doing the same. Don't remember if either of you stopped at the NStar yard in Plymouth when you arrived on Sunday, Feb. 10 when the storm was over. Where were all of you politicans on Friday and Saturday during the storm? Gov. Patrick could have turned his multi-million dollar mansion out there in the Berkshires into a shelter for those less fortunate; and, while I'm thinking about this, why not the State House? We taxpayers pay for it, let those with no heat and power take refuge in there. Instead of all these politicans Monday morning quarter backing, next storm get out there and assist those utillity workers, climb up a pole in freezing weather, with snow falling, wind blowing....you expect them to do it, how about all of you giving it a try? How about donating to them instead of all of you wanting us to donate to your political campaigns..that's the only time you know any of us. In the meantime, I will thank all those utility workers who worked around the clock in dangerous conditions to restore power, cut down trees and give us back our "conveniences".
