Cheap access to the Internet is in the air

Like almost everything except air, Internet access costs too much. So I could not wait to get my hands on two new products that offer “free” online access.

The quote marks are there for a reason. The two offerings, FreedomPop and Karma, require up-front cash for hot spot hardware, and offer a limited amount of no-charge bandwidth. They do not deliver blazing speed, since both use an obsolete 4G wireless cellular network, but FreedomPop and Karma are decent options for basic Internet access on a tight budget.

Thanks for bringing these to my attention. The one question I have is coverage. Would they would work at my second home in Maine where I pay handsomely to keep Comcast when much of the time it is not used. If so, they could be an ideal solution.

I think WiMax coverage in ME in unlikely. I just googled it and found nothing to indicate it's very useful that far north.

What sort of data mining are they doing? That seems to be the usual catch with Free Stuff these days. The need for a facebook account for use of one device makes me wonder even more.

This is vital info in 2013.

do not see any mention of secured access - would be good to know.

I also wanted to ask about the security & privacy of their internet connections.
