Curt Schilling makes pitch for dismissal of R.I. lawsuit

PROVIDENCE — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling asked a Rhode Island judge to dismiss a state economic development agency’s lawsuit over its $75 million loan guarantee for his now-defunct video game company, calling claims he and fellow executives misled the agency ‘‘implausible.’’

Attorneys representing Schilling and others at his former start-up, 38 Studios, on Friday filed documents asking Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein to throw out the lawsuit alleging fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy.

What gives? Everything boils down to politics for Mr. Schilling.  I never cared for his  politics but they didn't matter.  What was memorable, as far as I am concerned, was becoming a sports hero to a generation of  fans,  children,  for his athletic ability and courage, aside from his political beliefs.  Nothing lasts forever and what we are left with these days is business failure and bitter recrimination.  This guy may be his own worst enemy.

I'm inclined to believe Schilling and his 38-Studios in this particular situation. Especially regarding the disclosure that RI only loaned 50 of the needed 75, hard to argue they were kept in the dark. But, really, this just seems like lawyers racking up legal fees, just because they can. Of course Max Winslow wants to keep billing for another year. And then appeals, more billing, etc. It's over, move on.

And Curt, thanks for 2004!

For someone who ran around backing candidates preaching small government, Schilling sure sounds like a corporate welfare queen. Taking a state with an 11% unemployment rate and sticking it with over a $100 million dollar "kiss off" and then cry that they stiffed him is classic.
